The story of Parikshit being cursed by a Rishi and commentary of Srimadbhagawad by Shukadev

After Yudhisthir relinquished the throne of Hastinapur, Parikshit inherited it. He became a very popular king. His administration was based on truth and kindness and at the same time he was also a great warrior. The people all over the country loved him for his generosity and judiciousness. In his time he had defeated many cruel and corrupt kings. He had performed many Ashwamedha yajna(अश्वमेध यज्ञ). The Rishis, yogis and hermits were very pleased with him. Parikshit was a great devotee of Lord Krishna. Once the king went to the jungle for hunting. While in the forest he became very thirsty. He searched for water in the jungle for a long time but couldn't find any source of water. At last he saw a cottage and went near it. He found Rishi sitting quietly with closed eyes. His name was Shamik. Parikshit introduced himself and asked the rishi for water. But the rishi didn't respond to his request because he was in samadhi(trance) . The king requested again but to no avail and the nonresponse made the king angry. As such he was very hungry and thirsty which made him forget his commonsense and while leaving the cottage he garlanded the Rishi with a dead snake out of uncontrolled anger. This incident was witnessed by a friend of the son of the rishi and the son although a boy devoted tapaswi(yogi) felt very bad about it and cursed that whoever was the king he would be bitten by the most poisonous snake Takshyak on the seventh day. The name of the boy was Sringi. Shamik rishi felt very unhappy with his son for cursing the king. He praised Parikshit as a great king. He knew that the king had made the mistake out of hunger and thirst. So immediately he went to the king and found him repenting for his deed. Shamik apologized to Parikshit for the incident. But a curse is a curse and the king knew it. So he started preparing himself mentally to die and immediately he renounced the worldly life. He handed over the throne to his son Janmejay and left the palace. The news of his renouncement spread to the world like a forest fire. After leaving the palace the king went straight to the bank of holy river Ganga to meditate on Lord Krishna and live an austere life for the rest of the seven days. As such Parikshit was a very popular emperor and widely respected by the people and the rishis of the world. So,many renowned Maharishis came to meet the king in his last days of life. He prayed to them to tell him the glory of Lord Krishna (Narayan) for his liberation. At that time Mahatma Shukadev came to meet the king and the rishis. He was the son of Maharshi Vedbyas and widely respected in the community of Rishi for his knowledge and utter indifference towards the body and the material world. He always looked like a sixteen year old boy. His body emanated a bright light due to his purity. Seeing him all the Rishis along with his father Vedbyas stood up to honour him. Shukadev bowed before the rishis to pay respect to them. The king came to Shukadev and washed his feet and requested him to take his seat. The king along with the Rishis requested him to give discourse to describe the glory of Lord Krishna for the liberation of the king. On their request Shukadev had given commentary of Srimad Bhagawad for seven days. For the whole seven days Parikshit kept fasting without eating anything. On the seventh day the discourse by Shukadev ended and that day Takshyak, the serpent, bit Parikshit. But by that time the king was already liberated himself alive by listening to the glory of Lord Krishna, the all pervading Supreme Soul. So he took his last breath happily and his soul merged into the lotus feet of the Lord.
