When the news of the death of Chand-Mund reached the ears of Shumbh, he lost his temper. He orders ‘Udaayudh’, ‘Kambu’, ‘Kalak’, ‘Douharda’, Maurya’, ‘Kalkeya’ etc and their complete army to attack Maa Durga. When the army marched, the whole world trembled. Maa Durga responded to this with her Bow Chime and bell. Chamunda Devi and the lion also roared for the war.
In the meantime, Lord Brahma, Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Kartikeya, and Indradev also sent their energies to help Maa Durga in the war against demons. These energies took the feminine form. Lord Brahma’s energy became ‘Bramhmani’ mounted on swan holding ‘Kamandalu’ and ‘Akshaya-Strotra’ in her hand. Lord Shiva’s energy became ‘Shivaa’ with mounted on the bull, Chandra Rekha on her forehead and holding ‘Trishul’. Lord Vishnu’s energy, ‘Vaishnavi’ came mounted on ‘Garuda’ with ‘Conch’, ‘Disc’, ‘Mace’, ‘Sarang Bow’ and ‘Sword’ in her hand. ‘Jagyavaraha’ (Form of Lord Vishnu) took the form of a boar. Kartikeya’s energy, ‘Jagadambika’ came mounted on peacock holding ‘Shakti-Ashtra’. ‘Narasinghi’ (a form of Lord Vishnu) also joined the force with fierce nails. Indradev’s energy ‘Indri’ came mounted on Airavat with Vajra in her hand. Maa Durga ordered them to finish the army of the demons.
An immensely fierce form of energy ‘Ugrachandika’ emerges from the body of Maa Durga. She screams which was equivalent to the sound of hundreds of jackals. She then asks Lord shiva to go and ask Shumbh-Nishumbh to return back to the abyss with all his army. They must give back the heavens to the Gods and free the world from their torturous regime or else Ugrachandika will chew them alive. Since she went with Lord Shiva as the messenger she was named ‘Shivaduti’. But the demons on hearing this got enraged and ran towards Maa Durga with various weapons. Then the war started and created a dangerous visual.
Lakhs of ‘Matrugan’ emerged from the body of Maa Durga who destroyed the armies of demons in seconds. Vaishnavi beheaded lakhs of demons with her disc. Innumerable demons were killed just by the roar of Shivduti. Narasinghi tore apart the bodies of demons with her nails. Chamundi wreaked havoc in them with her fierce form. Indri attacked numerous demons at a time with her Vajra. Brahmani sprinkled water from armies of demons which left them powerless. The war field had turned into a sight of destruction for the demons.
Seeing this ‘Raktabeej’ entered into the Warfield. Raktabeej was granted a boon- every drop of his blood that touches the ground, a new body emerges from it. All the forms of Maa Durga attacked the army of Raktabeej but the drops of blood fell on the ground and he multiplied himself. And this gave rise to millions of Raktabeej in no time. When he didn’t seem to get defeated Maa Durga asked Chamundi to widen her mouth so that no drop of blood can fall on the ground. Maa Durga started killing the Chamundi collected them and started drank them. The army gradually reduced in number. And finally, when only the original Raktabeej was left, Maa Durga wounded him and Chamundi drank the blood leaving him bloodless. Maa Dura gave one blow with her sword and this was the end of Raktabeej.
