Maharishi Medha Continued his narration of Durga Saptasathi.
Seeing the death of other demons, Shumbh Nisumbh’s wrath knew no limits. They ran towards Maa Durga for a battle. A fierce battle ensued between Maa Durga and Shumbh-Nisumbh. They rained arrows on Maa Durga but in vain. Then Nisumbh attacked with his sword and wounded the head of Maa Durga’s mount, lion. Seeing this Maa Durga crushed the sword and shield of Nisumbh into pieces by her arrow ‘kshyurapra’. Then Nisumbh attacked with ‘shakti’ which was again cut by a chakra by Maa Durga. Then Nisumbh attacked with a prong. Maa Durga attacked Nisumbh with arrows and he fell to the ground. Seeing his brother lay on the ground Shumbh ran towards Maa Durga on his chariot. His eight hands had different weapons. Maa Durga blows her conch, rings her bells and releases bow chime. The lion roared fiercely. The whole world trembles because of these sounds. Then Maa Durga jumps from her mount and hits the ground with her fist. The sound was so loud that all other sounds of the battlefield got silenced. Shumbh points his blazing fire energy towards Maa Durga but is destroyed.
Seeing all his weapons getting destroyed, Shumbh roars in anger. His roar resulted in a bolt of tumultuous lightning. Their duel continues for a long time. But finally, Maa Durga pierces the chest of shumbh and he falls to the ground. By then Nisumbh had regained his consciousness. He attacked Maa Durga and her mount leaving them injured. He then attacks her with discs from his thousand arms. But Maa Durga shakes them off her body. She pierces Nisumbh with her weapon because of which another fierce demon some out of his chest. This demon ran towards Maa Durga and she severed his head. Nisumbh was finally dead.
Then all forms of Maa Durga - Shivduti, Ugrachandika, Brahmani, Vaishnavi, Shivaa, Kali, Indri, Varahi, Maheswari etc. started wreaking havoc on the battlefield. Brahmani sprinkled water from her ‘kamandalu’, Shivduti and Kali started chewing the demons alive. Indri attacks with her vajra, Vaishnavi with her chakra and Varahi with her nails. Her mount Lion also tore the demons apart. This way the whole battlefield turned into a site of destruction.
Chapter 10 Shumbh Vadh
Seeing his dear brother Nisumbh dead and the whole army destroyed he exclaimed in anger
“O crooked Durga, don’t exhibit your power to satisfy your ego. You are fighting the battle only with the help of other warrior women.
Maa Durga answered “O demon I am the only one. Who is there except me on this earth? They are all my forms. They have all emerged from me and will again merge with me. Now get ready to fight a duel with me.”
A fierce battle ensued between them. Maa Durga destroyed all his weapons one by one. Shumbh jumps off his chariot and gives a blow to Maa Durga’s chest. Maa Durga then rebukes and Shumbh falls on the ground. Shumbh and Maa Durga started fighting mid-air. Their battle continues for a long time. In the end, Maa Durga pierced Shumbh’s chest with her prong and he died.
Hence this was the end of Shumbh-Nisumbh. After this, all the deities pray to Maa Durga. Pleased with their prayer she grants them a boon.
She then predicted her future incarnations:
“In the 28th yuga of the Vaivaswat Manu, I will take birth in Nand and Yashoda house to kill Shumbh-Nisumbh.
I will chew ‘Vaiprachit’ and his supporters. Because of this, my teeth will turn red and I will be called ‘Raktadantika’.
It will not rain for a hundred years on the earth. Then the Rishi and Munis will pray to me and I will watch them with a hundred eyes. Hence, I will be called ‘Shatakhi’. Crops will grow from my body and feed everyone and I will be known as ‘Sakambari’. In the same form, I will also kill a demon named ‘Durgam’ and will be known as Durga Devi.
When the demons in the Himalayan Region will torture the Rishis and Munis, I will be born with a huge and robust body to kill the demons. Due to this, I will be called ‘Bheemadevi’.
When a demon named Arun will annoy the people then I take the form of a six-legged black bee and kill him.”
Maharishi Medha then completes his narration. He tells King Surat and the businessman the effects and importance of various religious ceremonies performed for Maa Durga. Both of them went to a riverbank and pray with full devotion. Their 'Tapasya' goes on for many years. They gradually gave up their food. They even offered their own blood to Maa Durga. Maa Durga, pleased with their devotion, appeared before them and granted the boon. Maa Durga said that King Surat would be born as Sawarnik Manu and rule the whole world. King Surat asked for a developed kingdom for himself that could never be taken away from him. The businessman asked for salvation for himself. Maa Durga fulfiled both of their wishes.
This is the end of Chandi Paath. By reading Durga Saptasati or Chandipaath with faith and devotion, a person can get rid of many obstacles of life. Even without performing.
