Maharishi Medha continued the narration of SHRI DURGA SAPTASATHI:-
After getting the news of the death of Dhumralochan by the goddess and the destruction of his army by the lion, Shumbh trembled with rage. He ordered the powerful demon brothers:- "CHAND (चंड) and MUND(मुंड), you to go to the wicked lady with large and powerful forces. Bind her and Bring to me. If you apprehend failure to bring her, then kill her along with the lion."
Chand and Mund immediately marched towards the goddess with a very big army and large scale of weapons. They saw her sitting on the lion and smiling. They tried to bind her which made the goddess furious. Her face turned black with rage. From her black face, goddess Kali emerged with a sword and loops in her hands. She was adorned with a saree made of the skin of Cheetah and a garland of human heads (नरमुंड). The flesh of her body was dried up and she was looking like a skeleton with dry skin. Her mouth was very very big with a large brandishing tongue. Her red eyes were deep inside. She was roaring which was making some demons lose their senses.
She was marching ahead and whoever came in the path were killed. She swallowed alive the soldiers, horses, elephants. Some were crushed under her enormous feet. The weapons targeted at her were crushed into pieces. Some were flung into the air by her punch. The whole army was destroyed within seconds. Seeing this Chand and Mund ran towards Maa Kaali and attacked with arrows and disc. But everything vanished into Maa Kaali’s mouth. She opened her mouth and the demons were blinded by the bright light emanated by her teeth. Maa kali then severed the head of Chand and Mund. Maa Kali then offered the heads of Chand Mund to Maa Durga. Because of this Maa Durga gave her the name ‘Chaamunda’.
